That helped the Quran and Islam to remain until this day.
According to historical accounts, the people of Kufa wrote thousands of letters to Imam Hussein (AS), asking him to go to the city and establish an Islamic rule there. When Imam (AS) decided to go to Kufa, some tried to convince him to change his mind.
He answered only by reciting a verse from the Quran: “Wherever you are, death will overtake you, even if you shall be in the fortified, high towers.” (Verse 78 of Surah An-Nisa)
Imam (AS) said that martyrdom is written in his fate and it will happen. Imam Hussein (AS) also said Islam and the Quran will not be revived unless his blood is shed and that will guarantee to safeguard Islam and the Quran until the Day of Judgment.
Then, he recited Verse 154 of Surah Al-Imran: “Had you stayed in your homes, those of you for whom slaying was written would have come out to their (death) beds.”
Even after the event of Ashura what is seen from the prisoners of Karbala is Quran messages and verses of the Quran.
After the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions, the prisoners of Karbala were taken to the Levant (today’s Syria). (In Kufa) Ibn Ziyad read Verse 10 of Surah Ar-Rum: “Then evil was the end of those who did evil,…”
In response, Hazrat Zaynab (SA) recited Verse 79 of Surah An-Nisa: “Whatever good reaches you, it is from Allah, and whatever evil reaches you, it is from yourself,” in order to convey to everyone the messages of Ashura, all of which are from the Quran.
Imam Hussein’s (AS) movement was a religious movement rooted in the teachings of the Quran. That is why in all of its stages one can hear the messages of the Quran.
According to the Quran, standing up to oppression and injustice is every Muslim’s duty. Imam Hussein (AS) saw Islam under threat in those conditions as the principles and tenets of the religion were being destroyed. Hence, he objected to it and launched the uprising, which was acting upon the verses of the Quran.
